Lesson 18 Appoggiaturas, Escape Tones, and Pedal tones

Lesson 18- Appoggiaturas, Escape tones, and Pedal tones

Part I - Appoggiaturas
An appoggiatura is where a chord tone is followed by a leap up or down of a third or more, and resolved by a step in the opposite direction. This is demonstrated in figure 1.

Part II - Escape tones

Part III- Pedal tones
Finally, pedal tones.  these are probably the easiest non-harmonic tone to remember.  they are approached by repetition and resolved by repetition. See figure 6

Notice how the bass voice stays the same from the vi chord to the ii chord.  The pedal tone is not taken into account when analyzing the chord, otherwise it would be D F A G.  Which does not make a whole lot of sense in context.
